Samara Barnes

Activist, Founder of Rossendale Red Bag Project

Samara works for a national children’s charity, but whilst on maternity leave decided to start her own community project to help alleviate period poverty for girls in schools in her area.

Thousands of tampons and pads later (and after being part of the #FreePeriods movement which has seen the government commit to providing FREE menstrual items in all education settings), Samara continues the fight and now supports anyone who needs access for free menstrual and hygiene items by galvanising her community into action. She regularly goes into schools, colleges and workplaces to talk about these issues to try and remove the stigma and open up the conversation. She has recently developed relationships with organisations to ensure that eco items and reusables are included in her offer to the community.

She was named Rossendale Woman of the Year and was put on the Council Roll of Honour for her commitment to her community and championing equality locally.
